Shiloh
After two months of disastrous reverses, Gen. Albert Sydney Johnston gathered Confederate forces in the West to strike back at Ulysses S. Grant's Union army. April 6, 1862 Johnston surprised Grant at Pittsburg Landing on the Tennessee River. Fierce day-long fighting at places like Shiloh Church, the Peach Orchard, and the Hornets' Nest not only took Johnston's life but also slowed his army's advance enough to make it fall just short of driving Grant's battered army into the river. With the arrival of heavy reinforcements next day Grant took the offensive, regaining the ground he had lost the day before.
