The Center for the Study of the American Civil War

CSACW main mast 2.05
The Center for the Study of the American Civil War - or CSACW - began in 2003 under the leadership of writer, and Civil War enthusiast Kraig W. McNutt.

The CSACW, which is currently seeking non-profit 501 c,3, status, is dedicated to collecting, archiving, scanning, and cataloging authentic Civil War documents like letters and diaries. We seek to partner between private collectors and historians so that the rich resources held in private hands can be accessible to top-rate Civil War scholars for academic study and publication.

One of the services the CSACW provides indiviudals seeking to sell authentic letters, diaries, documents, etc., is to assist the individual in getting the maximum dollar for their item or collection.

We have the expertise and experience to do the necessary research on an item, letter or diary, soldiers, regiments, etc., so it can retrieve maximum dollar at auction, like eBay.

If interested or for questions please email us civilwarcenter@gmail.com

How do we partner with collectors?

First let us say we commend those who are serious about acquiring primary resources from the American Civil War. Personal letters, diaries, and related documents and resources are an outstanding form of enjoyment for thousands of collectors throughout the United States.

The CSACW has successfully entered into "partnerhsip" with other private collectors like yourself. We are very involved in making hundreds of primary resources accessible to the academic common market of professional historians.

A common question or concern for collectors involves copyright. Here is a statement Dr. Steven E. Woodworth, Professor at T.C.U., has made regarding copyright issues:

"A copy or even the original is on deposit with the CSACW, but the owner retains the copyright. Scholars can read, study, and use the resources. They can cite it in their footnotes and even quote a brief passage within the provisions of what the lawyers call 'fair use.' Scholars cannot publish the whole text or a lengthy excerpt without the express written permission of the copyright holder."

Kraig McNutt is the executive Director of the Center for the Study of the American Civil War (CSACW) and Dr. Steven E. Woodworth - a historian who is professor at TCU - is the Chairman.

If you're interested in partnering with the CSACW please provide the following information to us:

1. Do you have an idea of how much and what kind of resources you'd like to share?

2. Do you presently have it "cataloged" and/or inventoried? Do you need help with this?

3. Of the list of resources you'd like to make available, how much is already scanned? What still needs to be scanned? How much is transcribed? Still need to transcribe?

4. Do you need assistance transcribing and/or scanning?

5. Do you have any existing agreements or arrangements with scholars or academic institutions regarding your resources that would impact our partnership?

6. How long have you been collecting?

7. Do you collect in any special areas, subjects, etc.?

8. What do you consider is the "most valuable" in your collection from an historical perspective?

9. Have any of your resources been previously accessed by scholars, and if so, what did they publish?

10. Are you planning to personally publish based on your own resources?

In some cases, we are able to make arrangements to personally visit a collector.
